Mazda MX-5 ND (MK4) Roof Drains – Soft Top and RF Maintenance Explained

Blocked roof drains can allow water into your ND’s cabin. Soft-top and RF models have different maintenance requirements, so knowing which procedure applies matters. Here’s what owners should know before cleaning.

MX-5 ND Roof Drain Maintenance

Your roof needs more than an occasional wash. Leaves and debris can block its drainage system and allow water into the cabin.

Soft top and RF need different care

Mazda’s 2025 MX-5 manual specifies cleaning the soft-top drain filters at least annually. For the RF’s retractable hardtop, it specifies cleaning the drainage outlets at least every two months.

These intervals and procedures come from that manual: check the handbook for your own year and market before starting.

Follow the correct procedure

Soft-top filters must be securely refitted after cleaning. An incorrectly seated filter can allow water inside.

The RF procedure involves positioning the roof to access the outlets. Follow Mazda’s illustrated instructions, switch the vehicle off as directed, and keep clear of the roof links and mechanism.

Still holding water?

If water remains in the RF drain trays after Mazda’s prescribed check, the manual advises dealer inspection for a possible blocked hose.

JS-ID takeaway: Add roof drainage to the maintenance list, especially when parking near trees.
