MX-5 NA Door Bushings – What They Do & Why Upgrade Them

A simple guide to MX-5 NA door bushings, what they do, the symptoms of worn factory bushings and why upgrading them can make your doors feel tighter and more solid.

What do MX-5 door bushings actually do?

The door bushings on the Mazda MX-5 NA/MK1 help locate and support the door when it is closed. The factory rubber bushings can soften and wear over time, which can allow a little more movement in the door.

On a car that's now decades old, replacing or upgrading them is a quick and simple way of tightening things back up.

Signs your door bushings may need attention

You may notice rattles or movement from the doors, the door may not feel as solid when closing, or the original rubber bushings may simply look worn, cracked or compressed.

Before replacing anything, it's also worth checking that your hinges, striker and door alignment are in good condition.

Why upgrade them?

Upgraded door bushings use a more rigid material than the original soft rubber design. Once correctly fitted and aligned, they provide a firmer locating point between the door and body.

It's a small modification, but one that can make the door feel noticeably more positive when closing.

Are they difficult to fit?

Not at all. It's one of the easiest MX-5 upgrades you can do.

Installation normally only requires basic hand tools and takes around 10 minutes. Loosen the bolts, replace the original bushings, align the new bushings correctly and tighten everything down.

We've also created a dedicated installation guide if you want to follow the process step-by-step.
